Library rules

These library rules and guidelines are meant to protect all who use the library. Library staff may require a patron to leave the premises or bar a patron from the library for non-compliance.

Noise:

A quiet atmosphere is necessary for reading, studying and conducting research.  Library patrons are asked to refrain from all forms of conversation. Cell phones and other audible electronic devices may NOT be used and should be turned off before entering the Library. Users who wish to meet for social purposes are encouraged to use other Campus venues, such as the Bistro and other appropriate outdoor or indoor facilities. For your convenience, two discussions rooms are available in the library for academic discussions.

Disorderly conduct:

Disorderly conduct such as fighting and use of offensive language is not permitted.

Emergencies:

When the alarm sounds, please follow staff directions promptly.

Food/Beverages:

Food or beverages of any kind may not be brought into the library. This rule is necessary in order to provide a healthy, clean, attractive environment for everyone.

Running:

For the safety of all patrons, please do not run in the library.

Smoking:

Smoking in the library is strictly prohibited.

Library staff areas:

Users are not permitted behind public service desks or any other non-public areas without permission.

Theft/Damage to property:

Intentional damage and/or defacement of materials, furniture, equipment or premises, or attempts at theft will be dealt with in accordance with Monash policy and the Statutes of South Africa. This includes mutilating books and magazines, writing on, or in any way damaging materials, furniture or premises.

Security gates:

If the security gates sound an alarm as you exit, you must return to the checkout desk to verify that all library materials in your possession were handled properly by staff.

Closing time:

Please leave the library promptly at closing time. All loans should be reported to the Circulation desk at least 10 minutes before closing time.

Acceptable use policy for internet workstations

  1. Access to resources on the internet is provided to support the research, educational and administration purposes of the University. All library users who use this service must do so responsibly, respective the rights of others.
  2. Do not attempt to login unless you are an authorised user.
  3. The work stations may be monitored to ensure that they are being used for the purpose for which they were intended .
  4. Do not display on the screens material which may be offensive to others.
  5. User must abide by the University’s ITS regulations.
  6. Workstations must not be used for business and profit making activities.
  7. Consumption of food or drink is strictly forbidden in all equipment areas
  8. Workstations may not be used for the playing of games.
  9. A quiet atmosphere is necessary for reading and studying. All Computer users are asked to refrain from all forms of conversation.
  10. The library reserves the right to determine the appropriate use of workstations. Library staff may request users who fail to comply with the above to terminate their session.
